FAQs about LED PCB Board

What is LED PCB?

An LED PCB is a circuit board “tailor-made” for LED lights. It mounts and connects LED components and other components to the printed circuit board, allowing the LED beads to light up, connect, and be fixed in place, while effectively dissipating the generated heat. The difference between it and a regular PCB is that it has specific heat dissipation requirements, and its pad design must precisely match the LED package pins. LED PCBs are widely used in various LED lighting and display products.

LED PCB manufacturing usually includes design review, material confirmation, PCB fabrication, SMT assembly, inspection, testing, and final delivery. The process may vary depending on the board type and project requirements.

LEDs generate a lot of heat when they are working. If the heat is not dissipated in time, the junction temperature will rise, which will lead to a series of performance and reliability problems. Effective thermal management serves to enhance the operational efficiency of LEDs and extend their service life, thereby preventing performance degradation, color shift, and component failure caused by overheating.

The method of assembling LEDs onto a PCB mainly depends on their package type. Currently, the mainstream types are through-hole (DIP) and surface mount (SMD), in addition to special processes such as COB (Chip On Board). SMD LEDs are automated or manually soldered using surface mount technology (SMT), while COB directly bonds the chip to the PCB and achieves electrical connection through gold wire bonding or flip chip bonding.

Lighting products require excellent heat dissipation, and aluminum-based PCBs offer better heat dissipation compared to FR4, making them widely used. However, FR4 is more cost-effective in some low-power applications, and it is chosen for lighting PCBs in certain products.
