Nonetheless, multi-bar LEDs are generally considered more energy-efficient than LED panels. This is because multi-bar LED lights emit a more accurate light distribution, making it easier to provide the necessary amount of light to each crop. The multi-bar design also helps reduce heat dissipation, which lowers operating temperatures and reduces energy waste.

Better Heat Dissipation

Due to their structure, multi-bar LED grow lights generally generate less heat than LED panels. The LED chips in multi-bar LED grow lights are placed linearly along the length of the bar. This design distributes the heat generated by the LED chips over a larger surface area, allowing for better heat dissipation. In addition, multi-bar LED grow lights have larger heat sinks that help dissipate the heat emitted by the LED chips. LED panels, on the other hand, are made of flat PCBs, which are more compact and smaller in size. This design does not dissipate heat effectively, resulting in higher operating temperatures. 

How high do multi-bar grow lights need to be hung? 

Lights too close can cause plants to burn and wilt, killing them quickly. Hang the grow lights too high and the plants will stretch, resulting in long, thin stems and very fragile branches.

When plants are in the seedling stage, the lights should be kept 24-36 inches away. During the vegetative growth stage, you should increase the distance between the light and the plant (probably between 12 and 24 inches). In the flowering stages, you can keep the height 18-24 inches from the crop. 

How to choose a multi-bar grow light?

LED chip brand

The easiest way to distinguish between high-quality LED chips and low-quality LED chips is to refer to the brand. If the light fixture is made with well-known brand chips, the quality, efficacy, and light output are guaranteed. The best LED grow light chips on the market today come from Samsung. Typically, high-quality LED grow lights mainly use Samsung LED chips. Of course, there are other high-quality LED chip manufacturers, such as Osram and Epistar.

Cheap LED grow lights with low-quality LED chips will most likely not produce the right wavelength of light for your crops to thrive. In addition, they may have a short lifespan, which speeds up the frequency of replacing your lights.

In addition to the brand of the LED chip, pay attention to the chip model. Different models of chips play different roles in the performance of the plant growth light.

Take Samsung chips for example. The Samsung LM281 model series has the lowest efficiency of all Samsung models. The LM301 model is the best. The Samsung LM301D LED chip in the LM301 series provides the least energy in this series. So you have better opt for the LM301H and LM301B models.

Uniformity of PPFD

What if two different multi-bar lights have the same LED chip brand and model, and a similar number of LED chips? The final tiebreaker is to look at the PPFD map. So why not look at lumens? Lumens are measured purely based on the human eye, but LED grow lights are not designed for human beings, but for plants.

To measure light for plants, we need to count the number of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) molecules that hit a specific area per second. This calculation is called the photosynthetic photon flux (PPF).  And PPFD measures the amount of PPF in square meters (m2).

Uniform PPFD is extremely important. You need to avoid grow lights that have a high PPFD in the middle and a low PPFD at the edges. This means that most of the energy of the light goes only to the middle, resulting in wasted energy and hot spots.
